Cross crawl is an exercise that I teach on our Kinesiology courses and it is essentially an exaggerated walk which facilitates the crossover of energy between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. This is important because when our energy doesn’t crossover, it slows down dramatically and can severely inhibit our ability to function well and even heal.

When we are born our energy runs in a homolateral pattern (homolateral means straight up and down) and it is actually the act of crawling that establishes the pattern of allowing our energy to crossover. Interestingly more and more experts are now realising that children who do not learn to crawl are more likely to develop learning disabilities.

To perform the cross crawl, lift your left leg and right arm together and then lift your right leg and left arm together, as if you are marching. As you move your limbs, gently twist your upper body so that as you raise your arm it crosses over the mid-line of the body to the opposite side. One of the many variations you can use is to tap a hand to the opposite knee.

It is well documented that cross crawl helps us improve memory, concentration and digestion. It reduces stress and anxiety, enhances creativity, lymph flow and boosts the efficiency of our immune system.
